9th Grade Animation

By: Alex

In animation class we study the basics in 1 & 2 point perspective by using the 5 basic shapes, and studied shading by using gradients. Right now we’re using 2 point perspective to draw a street scene by drawing buildings connected to the vanishing point. Next week we will start animating. Animation is a series of pictures presented in motion. I’m very happy to be in this class. This is my first art class and I’m learning so much. Can’t wait to start animating.

Thoughts on different mediums of animation

For the most part, I've had fun these past three years in the animation program. It remains, till this day, the only class that I can actually say I like or enjoy. Our first year we started with traditional 2D animation. We had to draw our animations by hand, frame-by-frame. It was very tiring work, but I loved doing it because hand drawn animation has always been my favourite medium. It gave me something to do and I was always really engaged when watching the animation play back on the screen.

Last year, we started learning how to work in photoshop. While it was still interesting to me, I didn't like it as much as traditional. I've had experience working with a tablet at home, so it wasn't really that challenging to me.

This year, we're working in Blender, a 3D modeling software. In all honesty, it's a totally different experience for me. I don't really like 3D animation all that much so actually modeling and stuff really isn't that fun for me. I'm still grateful for being able to learn how it works, but I know that I most likely wouldn't return to it on my own time. We haven't started any stop-motion yet, but I'm really excited for that even though I know it's going to be tedious.

From everything I've learned so far, I would have to say traditional animation is still my favourite and I doubt that's going to change.
