Animag: 2D vs 3D!

Grade: 9:

Period: 6

My animation class has just gotten into the first stages of animation. I just want to point out how remarkable it is. Traditional animation by hand, 2D animation. As well as animation on a computer.(Which we have not gotten to yet) Which is 3D animation. These types of animation are very different. It's controversial to which is better, however animation by hand and animation on a computer are both very difficult to do. Lets take a look at what makes these both good and bad.

What is 2D and 3D animation?

Pros: 2D

It depends on the person whether these are pros or not, however usually they are.

  • Done by hand which is more precise.

  • Allows a person to put their own style and effort into their work.

  • Many unique things can be created that may not be possible on a computer.

Pros: 3D

There are a few more 3D animation pros than there are for 2D animation.

  • Can easily undo mistakes since it is done on a computer.

  • A person has the ability to swiftly create a variety of shapes.

  • Can quickly switch through the amount of frames a person might have.

  • Projects can easily be saved and kept safe.

  • It's possible to easily control the amount of frames one wants to hold.

Cons: 2D

The cons of 2D animation also varies of the person who is carrying out a task like this.

  • 2D animation takes a very long time.

  • There is much planning needed before one can start animating.

  • Lines must be straight and exactly the same.

  • Guides that are used have to be made by hand.

  • There will be many times where a person will have to re-start their animation.

Cons: 3D

There are 3D cons as well. However there are fewer 3D cons than there are 2D cons.

  • The program might have certain limitations.

  • Cannot be as realistic and creative as one could while making a 2D animation.

  • There could always be a certain malfunction with the computer to where the models would not be displayed as they should be.

  • The computer that is worked on could be crashed, someone might even spill a liquid on it, rendering it very hard to recover the project.

In 2D animation, every single line has to be the same. The quality has to be exactly the same as well. It's very important that they are all the same, as well as the space between every single object or shape. It depends on the person whether this is a pro or con however usually this is a con. 2D animation does come with it's perks though. For instance, if one was working on a 2D animation, they have the ability to animate whatever they want, without worrying about the limitations of a computer program However 2D animation takes a very long time if a person wanted to make a long animation. (About five  minutes) Remember, one second of animation is 24 frames. Which is 24 frames per second (24fps). 3D animation is more on the easy side. Creating shapes swiftly, easily saving work, undoing anything that needs to be undone. Don't get your hopes up so quickly though. 3D animation may have it's advantages, however it also takes a very long time, just as 2D animation does. It can be challenging to create a 3D animation as well, seeing as the program might have certain limitations as well as the risk of having a virus or malfunction on the computer which can cause one to lose their project. Liquids are a bad hazard as well. One can only be so careful when making an animation, but it can be quite fun.
